ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
I've been using the "Japanese Charcoals" for several month, and tried these as a less expensive alterative. I can not believe how well these smoke! They offer a similar smooth heat and add NO charcoal flavor. They give a smooth, tasteful and robust smoke without that quick-light taste. I absolutely recommend these to anyone! If you're using quick lights, you must try these! They are a wonderful inexpensive alterative to more expensive options. You'll need a stove to get them started (you can use a candle, but they take about a minute to fully catch). You add more as you smoke which will catch from an already lit charcoal. Give these a try, you WILL NOT be dissappointed!

Semi-quick lighting is the key phrase...
These are not quick lights, but they do light faster than plain natural coals. You will need to light them on the stove or spend a minute or so on each cube with a torch. Don't even try using a standard lighter with these, you'll be fiddling with them for far longer than should be necessary.
That said, they do light more quickly on the stove than standard natural coals, and they don't impart any flavor that I could detect--as long as you let them really get going before putting them on your foil. They burn at a good temperature, I get nice flavor and smoke using them with Al-Fakher shisha.
All in all, they can hardly be called a bad purchase at 10 bucks a box. If you've got a few bucks to spare, it's worth giving them a shot to see how you like them. Personally, I think they work just fine.
