The Scene
Maxwell’s Brew is definitely not your typical watering hole -- but that’s exactly what makes it so charming. Located one block east of the University of Toledo, this popular coffeehouse-bar-restaurant has been a hit with the locals since it opened in 1995. And for good reason: In addition to excellent coffee, Maxwell’s serves alcohol and bar food and provides live original music every day on a year-round patio (it’s enclosed and heated in the winter). Maxwell’s storefront windows lend a bright, airy feel to the place. The decor is contemporary, with upholstered chairs and tables, and framed prints and stainless-steel paneling on the walls. There’s no bar here -- you place and pick up your drink order cafeteria-style at a small counter. You also can surf the Internet on Maxwell’s computer for $2 per half hour or plug your laptop into its "wired" back wall. What’s so cool about this place is that you can tailor your experience (more bar or more coffeehouse) according to what mood you’re in.
