The Scene
Sure to awaken your inner groove child, the Asian-influenced Mantra Lounge has become a popular nightspot on Milwaukee's East Side. Formally the site of nightclubs like ESO, the revamped space feels less like a dungeon now that its been decorated with warm burgundy, gold and olive tones and divided into four areas, each designed to represent the seven "chakras," or elements in Buddhism. For those not familiar with this Eastern religion, that means these sections will each serve separate functions, such as a DJ booth (shaped to look like a lotus flower), dance floor, V.I.P lounge and bar. The dance floor is particularly alluring: It's sunken into the floor, and light-projected images whiz high above your head while you dance. But if it's inner peace you're craving, head to the cozy den just off the martini lounge, which has its own bar and a quieter atmosphere. The club attracts mostly 20-somethings and, though it can get a bit smoky and DJs performances can be hit or miss, it's still a must try for anyone seeking enlightened entertainment.
